The app is simple, familiar, and useful for one-to-one conversations, while the API provides integration, automation, scalability, and control.

WhatsApp Coexistence was introduced to reduce this trade-off.

WhatsApp Coexistence makes it possible to expand how the same number is used across different customer service and automation environments.

However, in this article, we will cover two different ways of using coexistence on WhatsApp:

The first is Meta Coexistence, where a business uses the WhatsApp Business App and the Coexistence API with the same number at the same time.

The second is Official Coexistence + Z-API, where a business uses the Coexistence API alongside Z-API.

Understanding this difference is essential when choosing the right architecture and defining the role of each technology within your operation. Below, we explain how each model works, what it enables, and what to consider before implementation.

What is WhatsApp Coexistence (CoEX)?

WhatsApp Coexistence (CoEX) allows a number that is already active in the WhatsApp Business App to also be used within an API-based setup, without necessarily giving up the app.

With Meta Coexistence, a business keeps using the WhatsApp Business App while also using the Coexistence API with the same number.

This allows teams to preserve a workflow that is already familiar to both employees and customers while adding automations, integrations, and API-based capabilities.

One of the main benefits is being able to keep the phone number customers already know, reducing the impact of changing channels or contact information.

Even so, implementation depends on eligibility requirements, onboarding, and the features available for each configuration.

Coexistence does not mean that any API can automatically operate alongside the WhatsApp Business App. It is important to understand which architecture is being used and which rules apply to it.

The two coexistence models covered in this guide

In this article, we will separate two scenarios:

Model

What remains active

Purpose

Meta Coexistence

WhatsApp Business App + Coexistence API

Use the app and Meta’s official API infrastructure with the same number

Official Coexistence + Z-API

Coexistence API + Z-API

Combine the official infrastructure with Z-API integration and automation capabilities

With Meta Coexistence, the focus is on using the app and the official infrastructure together.

With Official Coexistence + Z-API, the architecture combines the Coexistence API with Z-API, which provides a REST API, webhooks, and WhatsApp integration features.

These are different scenarios and should be evaluated separately. Before implementation, it is important to confirm how the number will be connected, which systems will participate in the operation, and which features will be available in each setup.

See also: the new WhatsApp Business pricing rules for 2026 and how to protect your operation.

Meta Coexistence: WhatsApp Business App and Coexistence API

With Meta Coexistence, a number already being used in the WhatsApp Business App is connected to the WhatsApp Business Platform through the Coexistence flow while keeping the app active.

Once connected, the business can continue using the Business App for one-to-one conversations while also using the Coexistence API for automations, integrations, and customer service through connected systems.

Onboarding is handled through Meta’s Embedded Signup and may include confirmation within the app itself and phone number pairing.

The main outcome is that the same number remains available across two complementary environments: the app used by the team and the official API infrastructure.

What happens to message history and contacts?

During onboarding, the business may authorize contact and message history synchronization.

The model can synchronize up to approximately six months of previous one-to-one conversations, although certain types of content and media are subject to limitations.

Messages sent later through the WhatsApp Business App may also be reflected in the connected application through Coexistence synchronization events.

Group conversations from the Business App, however, are not synchronized to this API layer.

Before enabling the integration, it is worth identifying which information needs to remain accessible and confirming which data will be synchronized by the provider being used.

Does the app stop working?

No. Keeping the WhatsApp Business App active is one of the main features of Meta Coexistence.

Some features, however, change after the connection is established. Broadcast lists no longer work as usual, disappearing messages and view-once messages are disabled in one-to-one conversations, and live location sharing is also restricted.

Other features, such as calls and certain business tools, may remain available in the app without necessarily being synchronized with the platform connected through the API.

Linked devices may also be disconnected during onboarding and may need to be linked again afterward.

How does Meta Coexistence work in practice?

The process can be summarized in six steps.

1. Eligibility verification

The business confirms whether the number, account, and WhatsApp Business App meet the requirements for the Coexistence flow.

It is also necessary to use a solution that supports onboarding through the infrastructure provided by Meta.

2. Connecting the existing account

During Embedded Signup, the user chooses to connect the number already being used in the WhatsApp Business App to the official infrastructure.

3. Confirmation through the app

The flow requests confirmation through the WhatsApp Business App, which may involve QR Code pairing depending on the implementation being used.

4. Consent for synchronization

The business may authorize contact and message history synchronization.

This step should be handled carefully because it involves customer relationship data.

5. Integration setup

After onboarding, the platform completes the configuration required to send and receive API events.

The application can then use messages and webhooks to connect WhatsApp with customer service systems, CRMs, and automations.

6. Coexistence operation

Once setup is complete, the Business App and the Coexistence API both become part of the operation for the same number.

Ideally, the business should clearly define which types of conversations remain in the app and which are handled through the connected platform.

What are the advantages of Meta Coexistence?

The first advantage is keeping the number customers already know. This reduces the friction of a channel change and avoids the need to promote a new contact number.

The second is enabling a gradual transition to an API-based operation. Businesses can introduce integrations and automations without immediately removing the app from the team’s routine.

Another advantage is combining different ways of handling conversations. The Business App can continue supporting one-to-one interactions, while the API participates in automated workflows, integrations, and operations handled by other systems.

For small and medium-sized businesses, this can make it easier to adopt a more structured operation without requiring a complete process change all at once.

The value of Coexistence is less about duplicating channels and more about allowing the app and API to play different roles within the same operation.

You may also want to read: Official WhatsApp API vs. Z-API: differences, costs, and risks in 2026.

What is Official Coexistence + Z-API?

Official Coexistence + Z-API is a setup where a business uses Meta’s Coexistence API while also adding Z-API to its integration and automation architecture.

In this model, several components can take part in the operation: the WhatsApp number, the official Coexistence layer, and Z-API with its REST API and webhooks.

Z-API can connect WhatsApp with internal systems, CRMs, automation tools, customer service platforms, or AI agents.

The most important point is to clearly define which component receives, processes, and sends each message to prevent conflicts between automations and human conversations.

Why combine the Coexistence API with Z-API?

This combination may make sense when a business is looking for greater flexibility to connect WhatsApp with its own systems and automation workflows.

Integration with custom systems

Software houses, SaaS companies, and businesses with proprietary platforms can integrate Z-API directly into their products.

Events received through WhatsApp can be forwarded via webhook to the application, which then decides how to process the conversation and which action to take.

Process automation

A company can connect different business events to its communication workflows.

A payment confirmation, order update, or new lead, for example, can originate in an ERP, e-commerce platform, or CRM and trigger a message through Z-API.

The event belongs to the source system; Z-API handles the WhatsApp communication layer.

CRM-connected customer service

The integration can also use messages and webhooks to synchronize information with the CRM.

The application can log interactions, update an opportunity stage, start follow-ups, or route a conversation to the sales team.

AI agents and conversational automation

Z-API can also act as the inbound and outbound messaging layer in an AI architecture.

In this setup, Z-API transports the messages, while the AI model, knowledge bases, business rules, and integrated systems determine how the conversation is processed.

How do messages move through this architecture?

When a customer sends a message, the event may pass through several layers configured by the business.

The backend receives the available events, identifies the contact, queries the required systems, and decides whether the conversation should receive an automated response or be routed to a person.

Z-API provides webhooks for incoming messages, status changes, and disconnections. It is also possible to configure events related to messages sent by the connected number itself.

In an architecture involving multiple components, it is essential to track the source and state of each message to prevent duplicate replies.

Event

Recommended handling

Customer sends a message

Log the event and identify the workflow responsible

Message sent manually

Record the source and pause conflicting automations

Message sent by automation

Record the responsible workflow and update the required systems

Human support requested

Pause automation for that conversation and perform the handoff

Failure or status change

Record the state and apply the defined handling rule

Disconnection

Alert the operation and evaluate which workflows should be paused

Z-API also provides a dedicated disconnection webhook, allowing the application to react when an instance becomes unavailable.

Learn more: See how to use WhatsApp webhooks to build real-time automations with Z-API.

When can this combination make sense?

Official Coexistence + Z-API may be worth considering when a business already uses the official infrastructure but wants to connect WhatsApp with additional systems and automations.

This can be relevant for software houses, SaaS platforms, automation agencies, and companies with custom customer service or sales processes.

In these scenarios, responsibilities for credentials, data, messages, automations, and support need to be clearly defined.

Companies with hybrid customer service operations may also use different layers to organize human and automated interactions.

The value of the architecture lies in its flexibility, but it requires clear orchestration so that each technology has a well-defined role within the operation.

When may coexistence not be the best choice?

If a business only needs simple automations and does not need to keep using the WhatsApp Business App, adding multiple layers may create unnecessary complexity.

Coexistence also requires clear governance over who replies, which system controls each workflow, and when automations must be paused.

Without these rules, a hybrid operation can generate duplicate replies, loss of context, and conflicts between human service and automation.

Operational cost is another factor. Businesses should consider not only API pricing, but also implementation, integration, monitoring, maintenance, support, and team training.

Limitations and points to consider

Here are the main points to keep in mind when using Coexistence:

Throughput and volume

Numbers operating in Coexistence currently have a limit of 20 messages per second on the Cloud API.

High-volume operations should take this limit into account, as well as the capacity of other components in the architecture, including the backend, CRM, queues, and automations.

Customer service window

Cloud API rules continue to apply in Coexistence mode.

The 24-hour customer service window opens when the customer sends a message after onboarding. Outside this window, messages sent through the Cloud API must follow the applicable template rules.

Messages sent through the WhatsApp Business App do not create, extend, or modify the Cloud API customer service window.

This difference needs to be considered when building automations.

Features that are not shared

Not everything available in the Business App is synchronized with the API.

Groups and calls may continue to work in the app but are not reflected in the Coexistence layer. Meanwhile, broadcast lists, disappearing messages, view-once content, and live location have restrictions in Coexistence mode.

Before implementation, list the features that are essential to your operation and confirm how each one behaves.

Synchronization and history

When authorized, the initial synchronization may include up to 180 days of message history, with additional limitations for certain types of content and media.

There is also an operational window after onboarding in which the initial synchronization must be completed. This step should therefore be planned and monitored during implementation.

Usage and quality rules

Coexistence does not change the business’s responsibilities regarding communication quality, privacy, or WhatsApp policies.

More technology does not automatically make a poor communication strategy safe or effective.

How do you plan a safe implementation?

Follow these steps to implement Coexistence more safely:

1. Define the operational goal

Start with the business need that justifies Coexistence.

Is the goal to keep sales reps using the app? Integrate a CRM? Automate notifications? Build an AI agent?

The clearer the goal, the easier it becomes to define the role of each component.

2. Map the environments

Define what will be handled by the Business App, the Coexistence API, and Z-API.

Avoid allowing different systems to respond to the same event without priority rules.

3. Define the source of truth

Establish which system owns each type of information.

The CRM may be the source of truth for contacts, while the ERP or e-commerce platform manages orders, inventory, and payments.

A clearly defined source of truth reduces inconsistencies between systems.

4. Create handoff rules

Define when an automation should transfer the conversation to a person.

Sensitive cases, exceptions, or explicit requests for human support should follow a handoff flow that preserves the context already collected.

5. Use idempotency and queues

Design the backend to prevent duplicate processing and handle events that may arrive out of the expected order.

Queues also help absorb spikes and separate event intake from the execution of longer-running processes.

In Z-API, the native queue specifically organizes messages sent through its API and also offers configurable behavior during disconnections.

6. Monitor operational health

Track connection status, sending errors, message states, webhook processing, and failures across integrated systems.

Z-API, for example, provides a dedicated webhook for instance disconnections. The sooner a failure is detected, the lower the potential impact on customer service.

7. Test before scaling

Test incoming messages, manual replies, automated replies, media, new contacts, handoffs, disconnections, and recovery scenarios.

Also simulate situations where a person and an automation try to act on the same conversation at the same time.

Checklist for evaluating the Coexistence API and Z-API

Question

Why it matters

Is the number eligible for support different goals, but the business needs to decide which one is the priority.

As a transition strategy, Coexistence allows a business to adopt API infrastructure without immediately removing the Business App from day-to-day operations.

As a hybrid model, it allows the app and connected systems to participate in customer service with different responsibilities.

And when a business needs additional integrations, Z-API can connect WhatsApp with CRMs, custom systems, automations, and other applications.

The Business App can also provide an alternative manual interaction channel in certain situations, but it should not be treated as a substitute for a complete business continuity and contingency plan.

Regardless of the architecture, technology does not replace operational design.

The business still needs to define who responds, how conversations are recorded, when automation is paused, and how incidents are handled.

Coexistence requires flexibility and governance

WhatsApp Coexistence provides an alternative for businesses that want to keep the convenience of the WhatsApp Business App while adopting API capabilities.

With Meta Coexistence, the same number operates in both the Business App and the official Coexistence infrastructure, subject to the rules and limitations of that model.

With Official Coexistence + Z-API, the business adds Z-API to the architecture to connect WhatsApp with custom systems, CRMs, automations, and AI applications.

In both cases, a successful implementation depends on planning, clearly defined responsibilities, event control, monitoring, and data protection.

Z-API can take part in this architecture as an integration layer between WhatsApp and the systems involved in the operation.

If your company already uses the WhatsApp Business App and wants to expand its integrations and automations, consider how Z-API can fit into your WhatsApp communication architecture.

<div class="kk-star-ratings kksr-auto kksr-align-right kksr-valign-bottom"
